ITALO MONTEMEZZI

Italo Montemezzi was not a model student. In Vigasio and then in Verona, he loved billiards more than studying. Sent to Milan to enrol at the Polytechnic, he changed course and knocked on the door of the Conservatory.

After failing twice, he was admitted to the Composition course. From an early age, he revealed his musical talent, studying piano with passion, and in 1900 he graduated with honours, presenting a cantata conducted by Arturo Toscanini.

Thus began the career of one of the most original composers of early 20th-century Italy.

HIS PRIME

His consecration came with the work L'amore dei tre re (The Love of the Three Kings) in 1913. The work was highly successful in Italy and abroad, especially in the United States.

LAST YEARS IN VIGASIO

In the last years of his life, he spent a long period in the United States.
In time, he returned permanently to Italy, to his native Vigasio.
Here he lived a more private life, far from the big theatres.
He will continue to be a cultural and musical icon.

L'AMORE DEI 3 RE

In 1949 Opera News dedicated a special issue to L’Amore dei Tre Re, Italo Montemezzi's masterpiece from 1913. Among the critical contributions, Jane Phillips' stood out, defining the opera as an intense tragedy, worthy of the greatest international stages. Considered one of the most significant melodramas of the 20th century, the opera is striking not only for the power of its music, but also for the quality of its dramaturgy and poetry, capable of conveying deep emotions and refined psychological nuances.

A TRIBUTE TO THE MASTER

We have organised an evening dedicated to Italo Montemezzi, the opera composer whose name we bear. We believe that initiatives such as this should become a regular event, because opera represents an extraordinary heritage of Italian culture and humanity.
As an accommodation facility located in the birthplace of Italo Montemezzi, we wish to transform this event into an annual cultural offering that all citizens can enjoy and identify with.
